Most of us take for granted our ability to talk, chew, swallow and plant a kiss on a loved one's lips. But people who lack part or all of a lower jaw or other facial feature--because of cancer, an accident or a congenital condition--do not take everyday activities for granted. Eating and speaking may become nearly impossible tasks, and disfigurement may keep them homebound and deprived of a normal life.

Because blood supply to the damaged area has usually been impaired by radiation treatments, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an important part of treatment. In a series of thirty 90-minute sessions before and after surgery, patients enter a hyperbaric chamber at Seattle's Virginia Mason Medical Center. The pressurized atmosphere stimulates growth of new blood vessels, thereby increasing oxygen supply to the tissues and improving the potential for healing.
